'Always Like This' Textual Analysis

The music video starts out with various establishing shots of a play roundabout at a park, terrace houses, garages, and what seems to be a school yard. The footage is shown in a low quality style seeming that it's being played through a VHS on a retro TV with a bulging screen. This is accompanied by a long droning sound to connote the idea of the static background noise you would typically get. The use of this before the start of the song applies with Goodwin's conventions in that visuals often have a relationship to the music, which is in this case the long droning before the start.
After a few more location shots with pausing and fast-forwarding we're met with a mid shot of the entire band. Again, the mise-en-scene of how each member is dressed as well as the special effects reflects the 'indie' genre of the band's music by presenting a make-shift and independent style of the band's productions, clearly steering away from professional high end record labels who want a perfect piece.

As the video slows down we see a more simplistic scene with much longer shots, only showing the lead singer of the band. The direct address to the audience breaking the third wall dramatises the shot on a more serious note of the song. I believe this again applies to Goodwin's conventions as the visuals are seeming to illustrate and intensify the music's slower tempo and deeper feeling.
